ABSTRACT

Majority of the prisons are unable to comprehend the definition of what constitutes 'working.' According to Hanks (2008) in most of the case, the term working of prisons is used with an unclear definition that creates misconception regarding the rehabilitation of the prisoners (p. 98). The prison service is facing severe crisis due to the lack of adequate working practice in the prisons of th0e UK. It should be noticed that there are variety of factors that damage the ability of the prison to promote rehabilitation of the prisoners including insufficient budgets, short staffing, legitimacy as well as reoffending issues. The aim of the study is to explore the factors that obstruct the success as well as effectiveness of the prisons in the UK. Moreover, the study is intended to explore the impact of punitive system, prison's environment as well as behaviour of the prison officers on the rehabilitation of the prisoners. However, it is observed that major changes are required in the context of criminal justice system as well as punitive system in order to ensure availability of sufficient resources.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Working of prisons can be defined as the cusses as well as effectiveness of the prisons in terms of rehabilitation of the prisoners in order to minimize the antisocial behaviour of the prisoners. However, it should be taken into account that the majority of the prisons are unable to comprehend the definition of what constitutes 'working.' According to Hanks (2008) in most of the case, the term working of prisons is used with an unclear definition that creates misconception regarding the rehabilitation of the prisoners (p. 98).
