Introduction

Criminal justice relates to social control, crime mitigation, punishment for the violation of laws and rehabilitation efforts. Social justice refers to the creation of a society which is just and fair, which regards the human beings that inhabit it and respects their right. The core principles that govern a society under the social justice are equality and solidarity. Human rights and equality are at the center of social justice (Garside, 2010). These two have to go along as in the success of one will be the success of the other. If the criminal justice system is working fine then and only then will the society be as per the principles of the social justice system. Similarly, if the society is juts then people will live in harmony and they will have a sense of responsibility towards the society which treats them well and looks after their rights. They will not have the motivation to commit crimes. Hence, it would not be wrong to say that both are dependent on one another.

The purpose of a correctional facility is to help the criminals become a part of the society and become better responsible citizens who are in a position to contribute too. There are many forms of correctional institutions such as detention centers, jails, lock ups, penal institutions, reform schools and others. These correctional institutions are used by people for different purposes depending on the nature of the offense. The criminal justice system should ensure that rehabilitation services are provided in all the correctional institutions (Robinson, 2010). This is essential because these facilities help in making the society better. This is so because the criminal shave to be turned into better people. For instance, not all criminal institutions in the United States of America provide rehabilitation services for substance users (Bates, 2001).

Substance use is an addiction or a mental state of mind which needs attention and treatment. Many of the criminals serve their time in the correctional institution and then come back the same. In fact, in certain instances it has been observed that the company of criminals for a person who was jailed for a minor crime proves detrimental in that he learns about crime techniques that he did not know earlier. In addition, under the social justice system, it is the responsibility of each and every individual to respect the other. There is a stigma associated with people who are jailed. Even when they come out of the correctional facility they are treated as criminals. This encourages them to commit further crimes in that the society refuses to accept them and refuses to let them behave like a normal person (Kraska, 2006).
