Jimmy Carter aspired to make Government "competent and compassionate," responsive to the American persons and their expectations. His achievements were prominent, but in an era of rising power charges, climbing on inflation, and extending stress, it was impossible for his management to rendezvous these high expectations.

Carter announced his candidacy for leader in December 1974 and started a two-year campaign that gradually gained momentum. At the popular conference, he was nominated on the first ballot. Carter worked hard to battle the extending economic anguish of inflation and unemployment. Carter asserted that Soviet activities posed the utmost threat to calm since WWII and broadcast the “Carter Doctrine,” which threatened to use of any means essential to prevent an outside force from profiting command of the Persian Gulf.

Carter's foreign principle suffered its poorer humiliation over Iran in 1979, with the overthrow of the Shah and hostage situation for 444 days in Tehran. On November 4, 1979 a crowd smashed into the U.S. Embassy and grabbed more than 60 Americans, requiring that the shah be returned to Iran for trial.
