Preliminary Thoughts about a Theoretical Framework

In general, a theoretical framework can be described as a compilation of interlinked concepts and proves to be a valuable source of guidance for people who are conducting research. It is also used to determine what types of things are to be measured. Generally, A theoretical framework is also provides a theoretical perspective of a particular thing.  Although it can be a theory, a theoretical framework may also be seen as a rudimentary approach intended to facilitate understanding of something (Thomas, 1997, pp. 75-104). From the point of view of the researcher, a theoretical framework works as a guide, helping the researcher to identify the things that need to be measured. Apart from this, it also determines the statistical relationships to look for (Mertens, 2003, pp. 135-164). This makes a theoretical framework very useful in exploratory studies as it helps the researcher in making sense of the research question. As a result, the theoretical framework is an essential component of any research study. This is because it helps the in making logical sense of the underlying relationship that exists between the factors and the variables that have been identified as being integral to the problem (Thomas, 1997, pp. 75-104). By defining the type of relationship between the factors and variables, the reader is able to gain a clearer understanding of how they are interlined and interconnected. In addition to this, a theoretical framework also provides a direction to the research study since it is a collection of theories and thoughts and, as such, collects and explains all the interrelated concepts in the form of a theory. Therefore, the theoretical framework forms the essence of the research study as it not only highlights the key determinants and variables that have a direct ...
