Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination

Introduction

The stigmatization of certain individuals or groups is part of a social process that, in the broader context of relations of power and domination, produces and reproduces inequalities, ie, differential access to material and symbolic goods available in a given society. People and stigmatized groups are therefore privileged objects of prejudiced attitudes and discriminatory practices. It is important to highlight that there is no cause for discrimination or prejudice that precede or are outside of social relations. Prejudice and discrimination are addressed by the humanities and social sciences as singular phenomena whose manifestations are diverse and may relate to race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, age, generation or religious belonging, among other dimensions of social experience. The discussion will attempt to define and describe prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and in-group vs. out-group. The discussion will also incorporate my personal relation to these terms and (with adequate rationale) shed light on my identification of the term: stereotype.

Discussion

The stereotype is simply the "label" that we usually classify certain groups of people, and is much more common than it might seem. Introduced in society and adds the psyche [4] people through anecdotes, phrases, folk tales etc., because from an early age, people are conditioned to believe that certain groups of people are connected to certain attributes or characteristics.

Recognition by others is a human need, since the human being is a being that exists only through social life. An individual or group of people can suffer real damage, an authentic strain if people or society around them show them as a reflection, an image limited, degrading, debased over it. Each social group tends to adopt particular posture facing each other, this would be just a form of representation. The affirmation of a social representation is based on fundamental action and communication (Bodenhausen & Richeson, 2010). Linking together thought and language which allows the world's understanding and assimilation of the relations that are established. To understand who we are as a group, as a collective or individual who we are as individuals, depend on the interpretation and recognition is given to us by others. "No one can build his own identity regardless of identifications that others do it.
