Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination

Introduction

A prejudice is a social attitude that may be defined as the unfavorable behavior towards a "particular" group, ethnicity, race or individual. It is considered as a discriminative behavior which underestimates a particular community or group and promotes unequal treatment in the society. It is a negative assumption about a group. Prejudice is a harmful attitude for a society which grows differences among communities and discourages unity and equality among the society.

Prejudice is an unfavorable behavior for a society which creates a sense of insecurity and unequal treatment for citizens. Practicing prejudice violates fundamental citizen rights, and it is also against ethics. There are various internal and external causes resulting in increasing or promoting prejudice in a society (Crandall et.al, 2011). Certain types of Prejudice are there which are still in practice in several regions of the world. Cultural difference, ethnicity, race or color distinction and community difference give rise to prejudice.

Social Impact of Racial Prejudice

People often face racial prejudice at their educational institute or workplace especially those who are immigrants. After 9/11, there was a general prejudice in the western world about Muslims that all Muslims are terrorists. Muslims especially Arab Muslims faced violent acts and distinctive attitude in their universities or college and their work place. Many got fire because of having a beard or any female who covers her head. The prejudices caused immeasurable loss to humanity and exaggerated hater among races. As many Muslims have distinct features and appearance especially females, so it was an easy task to target them. The obvious racial prejudice created a lot of difficulty for them. Because of this racial and social prejudice, Muslims across the globe grew hostile towards Americans and Western people and lived a vulnerable life (Whitley & Kite, 2009).
