Powerlessness of Black Women

Abstract

Black women face may problems that lead to powerlessness. These problems arise from their limited accessibility to the empowering resources and their lower ranking status in the society. Their problems are also highlighted by the feminist theory in which has explained the four types of oppressions that the women in general and the black women specifically face in the society.

Powerlessness of Black Women

Introduction

The black women are mostly powerless due to their experience in the racial and gender oppressions which deny or limit their access to the resources which are empowering. These may include employment, education or fair income and the positions of power and prestige. The intersection of race and gender in black women will increase their exposure regarding the societal conditions which form barriers that confine their ability to apply solutions to the various problems. This increases their vulnerability in terms of helplessness that they experience. It is because of this reaction that the black women have more chances of experiencing powerlessness. This powerlessness leads to the construction of anger in these women. The gender role messages affect the anger expression in black women.

Discussion

The cultural expectations from the black women also provide fuel to the old myth of clack women that were strong. This myth compels these women to reach the unrealistic levels self-denial, self-sacrifice which results in the emotional distress. This combination of strength and powerlessness results in the creation of the problematic paradox for the black women (Prendes & Thomas, 2011).

Powerlessness consists of two factors which are the external reality and internal subjective experience. The internal experience is the belief of an individual that he has no control or very little control over the solutions and causes of a person's problems.
