Factors of Attraction

A great deal of elements exist that help determine our attraction towards others. We attract towards those people with which we have interactions more often, as is predicted by the mere-exposure effect. We also like those people who are attractive; or those people would be preferably liked by us, who match with us in attractiveness, as the matching hypothesis proposes. We are likely to attract towards those people, who share values and values similar to us instead of those individuals who have different values. We attract towards those with which we have equitable relationships. We also tend to like those who like us exclusively. Those people are also liked by us, who are hard to get. Thus, in short, the six factors of attration include: proximity, attractiveness, matching, similarity, equitability, and a trickier one to get. Due to these factors of attraction, we are more likely to make friendship with people having similar cultural background or similar physical aesthetic.

Human Need of Belongingness

According to Baumeister & Leary (1995), one of essential human needs is, perhaps, our desire for relationships. There are two parts within the need to belong:

(1) The need for regular positive interaction with others and,

(2) The need for stable and long term connections distinguished by mutual concern for other's welfare.

Thus, frequent contact and enduring connections are the two aspects of need to belong. The need to belong is an essential human motivation as a good deal of emotion, human behavior, and thought is evoked by this fundamental interpersonal motive.
