Poverty Among the Elderly in the U.S

Introduction

Poverty is a problem that concerns the whole world. But over the centuries, it took on a different look and size. Poverty is mainly lack of funds for basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, transportation. Broader meaning of poverty, describes it as a complex social phenomenon, caused by factors such as unemployment, the number of families with many children and parent, homelessness, or indicator of families living with a disability or long-term sick. It is estimated that approximately 2/3 of the world lives in poverty and one fifth in extreme poverty. The complexity of this problem makes the fight with him is very difficult. You can only reduce the extent of poverty, but it cannot be eliminated completely (Lepianka, 2011).

Poverty creates conditions that seriously affect the mental development of children. This is demonstrated by a study of more than four years of researchers from the Center for Medical Education and Research Hospital Norberto Quirno (Cemic). The data is particularly disturbing in a country where social exclusion grew steadily over the last decade and in which over 1,650,000 children under 15 are under the poverty line (ie, have less than 1, 4 weight daily, considered the minimum budget to ensure survival diet).

Been known for years that a stimulating environment, good nutritional quality and freedom from disease are factors that favor perinatal brain maturation. But the team of scientists from Cemic, who has four years researching the issue, raised the converse question: is it true that the conditions associated with poverty have negative effects on the brain processes and learning capacity necessary to compete in life adult? The answer is yes. Since the beginning of this research project in 1996, the group of Applied Neurobiology Unit (Cemic-CONICET), directed by Dr. Jorge Colombo, has been studied in three stages over 600 healthy children between six months and five years in households with unsatisfied basic needs (UBN) and met (NBS) Capital and its suburbs. According to INDEC definition, a household is considered when no toilet NBI has school-age children are out of school rooms and the ratio is equal to or greater than three, no water connection or has a head with complete primary schooling by four or more people.

Discussion

In developing countries 1300 million people live below the poverty line, more than 100 million people live in these conditions in industrialized countries and 120 million in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Disparities in poverty really reach alarming; South Asia has the largest number of people living on $ 1, i.e. 515 million people. Followed by East Asia and Pacific where 446 million people live in these conditions. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia countries 120 million people live on $ 4 a day (Marjit, 2010).

On the opposite side are the industrialized countries, as Europeans, or Japan or Canada, usually their economies suffer from very low inflation, the poverty line is set at 14.4 dollars per day per person and poverty rate does not even 15 percentage points to ...
