Politics of Mass Murder

Introduction

According to FBI, murders occurring during a particular event of four or more individuals with no cooling off period are termed as mass murder. However, mass murder is often interchanged with mass destruction or genocide. With exceptions the end of the perpetrator after many acts of mass murder is either by veritable suicide or killed by the law enforcement (Gellately, 2003, pp. 1-19). Mass murder involves the heartless killings of innocent people at the hands of people with extreme views who view killing as the only solution to a problem they think needs to be solved. There have been several incidents in history relating to the holocaust and there has been debate over the reasons for these events. The debates have ranged from the origins and the motives behind these heinous acts.

The purpose of this essay is to critically assess the Intentionalist and Functionalist perspective between the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocides. Genocide and Mass murder do not happen overnight, although each instance has its own evidences. However, there are some underlying reasons that give rise to these mass destructions of human lives. The Holocaust and Rwandan genocides are two of the biggest and horrifying tragedies in terms of killing, and the way they were carried out. Furthermore, this essay is going to identify the Functionalism and Intentionalist in the approaches of Holocaust and the Rwandan. The critical analysis of the perpetrators of these two cases will not be effective without knowing the underline causes of crime. Thus, first this essay will examine the cases and the reasons of crime that were carried out by the Rwandan and the Nazi Germany, and then it will identify the role of perpetrators in each study and their role in implementing the genocide.

After the colonial policies and the concept of 'divide and rule' that reform the old social concept of the people and paved the way for ethnic conflict that led the genocide of 1994. Belgian colonialism favoured and gives importance to Tutsi; they were prioritized in the functional and operational activities. In contrast, they marginalized the Hutu which makes their living difficult.

However, after the implementation of this colonialism, a political struggle emerged in which Tutsi's were in power and want to retain; on contrary, Hutu's analyzed that their starvation are not going to ...
