Discuss the powers of the governor's office and those of the state legislatures. How have these powers changed over time? In your opinion are the powers of these two branches of government sufficient for the responsibilities entrusted to them?
Powers of the governor's office
Governors are subjected to serve as the chief executive officers. These governors control the governance of fifty states and five commonwealths. As state managers, governors are employed to revise programs and policies using various orders and budgets at the executive level. Moreover, governors are also responsible for pursuing new policies.
Governors are trained to carry out their objectives such as those related with management and leadership with the appropriate help and support from the agency heads. Many of the governors can even hire court judges of the state as suggested by the nominations committee. The governors are ranked on the basis of the following factors: qualifications, their veto and legislative authority. Moreover, an authority that may vary from state to state is to take emergency actions and to issue executive orders. In the majority of the US states, the governor is regarded as the chief governing the executive division of the government. The management of state budget is also under the control of a governor. According to the US constitution rules, a governor is capable of filling vacancies with two senate seats in the state (Steve, 2013). Categorization of Governor's Powers
Governors must be provided with various tools and resources in order to comply with the fulfillment of their roles. These powers can be distinguished as either formal or institutive. During the tenure periods of governance, a variety of powers may come into foreplay some of which are highlighted above. The formal power of the governors can be regarded as one major resource that a governor can enjoy.
The veto power is another power that a governor can improve. It is the power to oppose a legislature. The strength of a particular veto that a governor can make is variable; it can vary from strong to weak. The appointment powers are regarded as vital and important tool. A governor must respond to their preferences on political issues. Governors should make sure that motivations and policy goals by different people should also be followed. A governor's chief executive role is hindered by the presence of state officials. These state officials are not dependent for their jobs on governor.
Another important power of the governor is the tenure potential; it is more likely a traditional sense. It is a kind of power which a governor cannot directly employ or use. A governor's power flourishes with time as per Schlesinger's idea. Formerly, there was a growing trend of longer terms and greater opportunities for the governor's reelection. This trend reached its apex in 1970. This was known as the tenure power.
