Introduction

In this paper, we will discuss the theme of Orwell's book 1984. This paper discusses the theme of language corruption and control of history. According to O'Brien (1984), the person who controls the past, control his future as well. The person who has control on his present, he is able to control the past.

It is believed that liars run the government and there is nothing that should be believed. George Orwell kept political theme of his book. He discussed corruption of language, Big Brother surveillance. It is believed that what he discussed in his book, it has already come to the level in countries with communist approach and in western states (Bloom, 2009).

Discussion

Orwell examined the life in a society in which liberty is not present even the concept of liberty has been vanished from the world. There are several themes of Orwell writing, but the major themes are the totalitarianism and impoverishment of language.

Totalitarianism

According to Orwell, the authority of security police in West for the interception of mail and phone tapping has been extended most of the time. Numerous files are kept by police agencies for law abiding people. Majority of public officials is allowed to enter personal homes of people without having any warrant. Several departments of government maintain digital data of citizens and there is rick that this data if fed into a centralised bank of data (Robert, 2009).

The law enforcement agencies make efforts to acquire more information via informer systems with implementation of new law enforcement agencies together with novel techniques like digitization of data are comprehensible. However, the cumulative consequences of these big brother practices make countries like Australia, United States and Britain totalitarian societies (Bloom, 2009).

Impoverishment of Language

The impoverishment in language discussed in 1984 has been prevalent in social media these days, with Newspeak terminology like socialist, democratic war criminal, fascist, racist, freedom fighter and several other expressions are being used in an intentionally propagandistic and deceptive manner for whipping up the mass hysteria or just for ensuring that no one is bale to obtain even an approximation of reality (Robert, 2009).

Newspapers are a key role player in Oceanic communities and the control of party over the public. Newspeak minimises and restricts the number of words in Language and it eliminates the words that are used for the description of rebellion or independence goals. Interestingly, the work of party is done in such a way to form the language around itself instead of natural acceptance and assumption of the language of the public that develop a country. Consequentially, language is used as a mechanism of controlling minds. Removal of original language of a nation serves as the reduction of the significance of the history of the nation. Languages are developed over years and they are intensely intertwined with history and culture of the nation (Moustaki & Borman, 2011).
