Politeness in Discourse Analysis

Introduction

The term speech acts in the name should not propose that this paper is assistance to what has arrived to be renowned as speech proceeds theory. It does not deal with the abstract idea of talk actions but the incident and function of those utterances where the participants talk of what they are managing in their discourse (Coulthard, 1985, 31). Explicit quotation to the ongoing discourse, i.e. talking of talk actions is considered as an entails of discourse organization. In this way the item is rather assistance to the empirically founded enquiry of discourse. However, different most discourse analytical investigations, it not only endeavors to interpret interactive notions but furthermore endeavors to display how these notions are connected to the lexico-grammatical inventory of English. The internal and the external perspective of language have their own ideologies towards the study of a language and it is visible that the internal & external attributes of the language are complex cycles of communication in a language (Fairclough 1992, 11).

Politeness has always been a phenomenon that has strongly influenced relationships. Paradoxically, despite the importance that it has granted for centuries, politeness remains a controversial topic among researchers so far have not agreed on a precise definition of this concept or an exact delimitation of the search field. Politeness has been defined as "the set of rules, practices that determine the behavior in a social group, and to be respected, delicacy and refinement." According to The Concise Oxford Dictionary (New Edition, 2003) politeness is "all uses of the rules that govern the behavior, language, considered the best in a society does and how to observe these practices" with the following synonyms: kindness, civility, courtesy, education, manners, politeness, decorum, good taste and sensitivity (Taylor &Cameron, 1987, 48).

Theories of Politeness

Following are the four main theories that have influenced the scientific analysis of politeness over time.

The Socio-Normative Perspective

This perspective is based on the sense that the general public traditionally given to the concept of politeness. This is the premise that every society has a set of social norms that occur in more or less explicit rules about what constitutes appropriate social behavior. Politeness and represents the application of these rules in social interaction, while rudeness amounts to violation of these standards. Although the socio-normative enjoys such popularity, the tradition of linguistic work knows little or no reference to this perspective and we can probably say that it has few adherents among contemporary linguists.

The Perspective Of Discourse Analysis: The Conversational Maxims

The promoter of this theory is the linguist Paul Grice that 'every speaker is a rational individual whose primary purpose is to convey effectively the message "1 (1975: 45). Following this reasoning, any conversation is supposed to respect the general principle of cooperation which can be paraphrased thus: "I must say what we mean, when you want to say and how you want to say”.
