Introduction

The time when Shakespeare and other great poets of English wrote, the society was mired by intense hostility towards keeping any sort of affection for a member of the same sex. Homosexuality was greatly abhorred and socially unacceptable. Maybe this could be the reason why these poets while keeping away from exhibiting any homosexual leanings, found depicting homoeroticism in a hidden and concealed way a much more secure way to forward their imagination and leanings (Casale & Bloom 2009 , p. 165).

Much of the homoeroticism featuring in their writing turns out to be greatly confusing, vague and debatable. It could have been a deliberate attempt on their part, in order to find a safe and an easy way out in case if they were to be prosecuted on charges of homosexual tendencies by providing them with the benefit of the doubt cast by the multiple meanings of their work.

In my opinion the rhyme scheme tends to be alternate in nature as the alternating rhyme also tends to suit the pretext of the poem which tends to be discussed in the future of the company.

Symbolism was the movement beginning in the late 20th Century. It represents the dark side of romanticism and feelings of an individual or object that a reader can relate in a positive way. The use of symbolism in this poetry is a means of explaining the feelings of a girl about her breaking relationship.

The use of words 'Water' and 'Sea' relate to her wish of being carefree and away from all the stress in this world just like the sea as it is clear of all the worries in the world and does not have any hardships to face. She is unable to express her feelings to her beloved and drown herself in the deep sea.

Overall it seems that the poet even if he wanted to highlight cravings or feelings towards the same sex, preferred to disguise it and keep it on a secure footing in case if he was prosecuted. The vagueness and ambiguity surrounding his writings would have helped him to break free of such charges. Therefore, one would find the poet has tried to conceal and disguise such feelings rather than resorting explicitly to point out to homosexuality.

Shakespeare sonnets strongly illustrate his bisexuality as homoeroticism is evident in 126 of his sonnets in which he addresses a young man or the “fair youth” as he refers to the male character in his sonnets. Furthermore, evidence suggests that he tried to disguise promoting homoeroticism by appearing to depict a male with a woman like figure rather than openly coming out in the likeness for some one of the same sex (Stanley 2004, p.34).Several of Shakespeare sonnets immensely indicate strong desires and emotions towards a young man.
