Explain and evaluate how the manager carries out Mintzberg's three managerial roles: the interpersonal, the informational and the decisional roles.
Answer
The paper requires exploration of a manager and organization with which I am familiar. For the purpose of discussions of this paper; I have selected the company 'Kraft Foods' as I am familiar with one of the managers of the organization. The reason with which I have selected the organization and manager to discuss is that the manager seems to be an exceptionally competent human being having all the relevant competencies to become a good manager. The manager of Kraft Foods tends to carry out the managerial roles described by Mintzberg efficiently.
In today's modern business world; a manager needs to be extremely competent and capable of performing several different roles simultaneously. The allocation of Mintzberg's three managerial roles into interpersonal, informational and decisional roles is further divided into different categories. The interpersonal role revolves around being a figurehead, leader and a liaison whereas the informational role tends to encompass the roles of monitoring, disseminating and being a spokesperson. On the other hand; the decisional role tends to describe the role of entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator (Thornton, 2008 Pp. 28-32).
The manager in question is essentially capable of performing all three functions categorized by Mintzberg. Starting off with the interpersonal roles; it is always written in theory that managers need to be good at communication. This is not true with every manager. Not every manager possesses the art of communicating with his or her employees in an effective manner. However, the manager in question is extremely good communicator and is exposed to minimum problems due to his exceptional communication skills.
The manager is performing the role of a figurehead and leader by providing the employees a clear sense of vision for their future. The manager is extremely concerned about the growth and development of its employees. The focus of manager is dual fold; growth and development of business and employees both. The manager tends to motivate the employees for working hard and develops a vision for their future. Providing a clear explanation of the organizational goals and objectives to the employees facilitate them to link their own objectives with those of the organization.
The manager is essentially working as a liaison between the Kraft Foods and employees. The manager of Kraft Foods is so good at communicating that he is capable of making employees work harder to achieve the organizational goals and also to link their personal goals with the growth of the organization. Thus, the manager of Kraft Foods seems to fulfill the criteria established by Mintzberg that managers must perform the interpersonal roles efficiently.
Moving on to the informational roles; a manager who aims to become successful and popular amongst the employees must perform the informational role very effectively. In accordance with the theory of Mintzberg; the information role is divided into the roles of monitor, disseminator and spokesperson (Iqbal, 2011 ...
