After he returned to Athens, where for 10 years worked on writing philosophical works, which bear the stamp of Socratic philosophy. Then he traveled to Egypt and Cyrene, which was associated with the mathematician Theodorus, and finally in Taranto, Italy, where he met the Pythagoreans, from the philosophical thought which influenced decisively.

The friendship, however, has prompted suspicions of Dionysius of conspiracy, so Plato expelled from Sicily. In Aegina threatened to be sold as a slave but he bought the Cyrene friend Annikeris.

Returning to Athens opened his philosophical school, the Academy (387 BC). The effort, however, the two friends to convert their ideas in new ruler Dionysius II, failed. For the third time he came to the court of Syracuse in 361, with the aim of reconciling Dion to Dionysius. This time and risked his life. The intervention saved the Pythagorean Archyta. But Dion is not spared. He was assassinated in 353 BC Thus Plato lost man in which based its hopes for the imposition of political ideas. Since Plato and until his death in 347 BC, he was involved with teaching and writing philosophical works.
