Why leaves change color in Autumn?

Many trees shed their leaves to reach the fall, and prepare to pass the unfavorable season in a winter resting phase. Before falling, the leaves lose their green color characteristic turns to shades ranging from yellow to deep red, through ochres and oranges in between. The chlorophyll and other pigments such as carotenoids, xanthophylls and anthocyanins are responsible for these changes in tone.
