ABSTRACT
The telecommunication world has come a long way in a couple of decades. There has been a big transition from analog telephone network to a digital circuit-switched network. This move from circuit-switched to packet-switched technology has led to the transfer of voice and data over internet Protocol (iP) networks. As VoIP promises to take over POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), the ensuing debate is whether the transition will be accepted at mass level by the world's population. And whether VoIP will be able to deliver what it promises. The transition from circuit-switched technology to a packet-based infrastructure affords an opportunity to revisit many of the fundamental design choices that have governed the architecture of the world's most widely used telecommunications service, telephony. The present study aims to study the factors that mark the shift from POTS to VoIP. it also seeks to describe the advantages and disadvantages of VoIP. The results conclude that there seems to be arising remarkable opportunities for VoIP applications adoption and implementation in the next decade or so. With a growing economy, companies are willing to explore, adopt and implement the newest technology to support their rapid development and push further diffusion of iP-based innovations for gaining competitive advantages and satisfying their customers and suppliers.
