Introduction

Let alone the lands, even the waters of this world are not secure. Over time crime has taken place in numerous forms, stealing, snatching, killing, hoarding, aggravated assault, and much more. However, interestingly, the general perception of naïve person revolves around the crimes being indigenous to the lands only. However, nature has blessed mankind with a highly cognitive mind, which he at times uses in a negative manner to devise the plans that may best suit his needs, by snatching the rights of others. Since primitive times, the mankind has used this brain to devise the plans of attaining or fulfilling his needs via negative means, and it was then when the domain of crimes had been introduced to this world. Therefore, it was the same time when, the mankind further utilize this brain to figure out that their boundaries can also be extended to the oceans, rather than simply being confined to the lands.

Piracy

In literal sense, the term piracy means, hijacking someone else's property (mainly ships), and snatching it from an individual or party, which is the legal owner of it. Moreover, it is also deemed as the execution of the violent or criminal acts on the seas or the oceans. This term does not attribute to the connotation of stealing or offending the people travelling on the similar watercraft. However, it pertains to a designated group, adept in the execution of criminal activities on waters (seas and oceans).

Characteristics of Piracy

As discussed earlier, the term piracy refers to the execution of criminal actions, mainly hijacking and stealing on other watercrafts, on to the waters. However, the real phenomenon of piracy goes far beyond the general understanding and comprehension of this notion. The general characteristics of the act of piracy can be understood in both primitive times and the modern era. Technology might have brought significant changes in the acts of pirates, as well as their key intentions; however, the key characteristics of piracy remain the same to a significant extent. As discussed earlier, the pivotal factor of piracy is revolves around capturing a commercial or private ship, boat or water craft. Moreover, the subsequent characteristics of piracy revolve around accumulating whatever assets they can get hold on, on the ship or water craft that they have hijacked. Seldom does it happen that the boundaries for the pirates extend to a considerable extent. Most of the times, the act of piracy executed by the pirates are confined to their own chosen and designated regions or water boundaries. They operate within those regions, and prey on those ships or boats, which are unfortunate enough to enter those water premises.

Now, there lies a great debate over the raids conducted by the pirates being violent or non violent. Primarily, it depends on the intentions of the pirates.
