Reflective Practitioner in Physiotherapy



Abstract

A competent physiotherapy practitioner knows the importance of adapting the reflective practice in their profession as a desirable and necessary attribute. Physiotherapists must adopt the practice of reflection-on-action and reflection-in-action. They must be able to differentiate between them. This report will demonstrate the importance of reflective practice, and it is conceptualized and understood by physiotherapist professionals and students who are in the learning process of physiotherapy. This report will reflect the practical and contextual differences of modes among practitioners and students. We have examined the Prospective of reflective practice as a means for practitioners in the workplace. These issues have wider relevance with the other professions as well, but we will discuss it with reference to physiotherapy practice.

Introduction

Therapists or Physiotherapists are the medical representatives who are experts in the movements and exercise. They are responsible for developing and maintaining people's mobility and function throughout their span of life. They have advance knowledge of how body moves and work easily and the factors that hinders the movement of the parts of the body.

They promote mobility, fitness and independence through using exercise activities. Physiotherapists treat those problems that are mainly caused by pain, disability, disease, injuries that are related to work and sports, illness and inactivity for a long period of time. They work in hospitals, schools, sports centers, health centers, education and research centers and nursing homes.

Physiotherapists analyze and evaluate their experiences through higher level intellectual and effective activities to lead to a new understanding and appreciation of the way they can operate in the clinical setting. Reflective practice is not just considered as a thoughtful thinking. Reflective practice enables to explore the clinical practice and modify their future actions through generating knowledge. Reflective practice is the critical analysis of the working practices that are performed every day by the physiotherapists for the improvement of the competence and promotion of professional development. The process is considered as conditional because of the possibility of the errors in professional actions due to faulty assumptions. In order to achieve professional and ethical objectives, it is very important to detect such errors (Argyris et al., 1985, pp.1188-1192).In both academic and practitioner levels, it is important to have a closer inspection of reflective practice to identify the differences in the conceptions. This will serve as a groundwork or training for students in clinics.

An exploration of the effects of reflective practice in the work place is determined by the quality of pre and post learning of the professional trainings of a physiotherapist. It is believed that if work context dominates professional socialization, it implies that academic context is overshadowed by the learning experiences.
