Mental Health and Physical Activity
The benefits of incorporating physical activity in the promotion and maintenance of mental health and wellbeing are vast and well researched. Physical activity has been proven to reduce stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression (Biddle, & Asare, 2011). The impact is so significant that many physicians now integrate exercise into treatment programs for anxiety and depression; and often, in the treatment of addiction. The research conducted showed athlete females; when compared with non-athlete females; had stronger emotional character, functional capacity and reported greater quality of life. Studies have also highlighted the positive correlation between physical activity and cognitive function. The same research showed that children have higher success at school when incorporating physical activity in their day and a significant reduction was shown of the negative cognitive effects of aging, including dementia, where physical activity is engaged in on a regular basis. The World Health Organization projects that depression will rise to the top three global health burdens by 2030 and the U.S. alone has an estimated medical expenditure of $42 billion per year placing mental health disorders in the top five medical conditions.
