Pertussis Disease: Research Review

Pertussis disease or whooping Cough is considered as a highly contagious infection in the respiratory tract which has the potential to remain for months in the human body. The Coughing is highly contaminated among the vulnerable children who are more likely to get this disease from their adult household contact in the form of parents, uncles, aunts, neighbours and older cousins and siblings (Heavey, 2008, pp 1-4).

Pertussis in infants: how to protect the vulnerable?

Research Problem

Lai-man R Chuk and et al performed a case-series study to find associations between adults immunized against this form of coughing and its existence among young children.

Research Approach

The study conducted by Chuk takes into account the historical background, status of vaccination, admission, results and qualitative value of discharge coding of young infants who have been hospitalized with pertussis at a tertiary children hospital.

Research Methodology/ Data Collection

In the study, the researchers identified related cases from positive Bordetella pertussis and from hospital's discharge registers, the time period of which ranged from 1997 to 2006. They further evaluated fulfilment of each of the case, as compare with the total data of all the identified cases. They located fifty five young children who were hospitalized due to pertussis disease.

Data Analysis

The 35 cases out of the total of 55 (the actual average age of the 35 cases were less than 3 months old), are more likely to attain this disease and are at more risk of ICU admission, higher mortality and the source if their infection was none other than their parents and family members. At the time of admission, almost 9% of the observed cases where two weeks overdue for their prior schedule vaccination for coughing.

Research Findings

The 9 cases had inaccurate release coding and even young children who had proper course of coughing vaccine have the potential to acquire hospitalization. The parents who are already immunized can plan in advance, to save their new born by giving them proper vaccinations in order to reduce the emergence of such disease in the future.

Arm your patients against whooping cough

The Pertussis disease has the potential to turn into serious complications especially for infants and children and sometimes patients' death. Its symptoms include severe form of coughing which is initially at the low level but increase its intensity with time. It also generates high pitch sound of “whoop” among infect children as they inhale the infected air after coughing. The duration of coughing is around 6 weeks, but it can remain longer if proper medical attention has not been given to the patient. The article by Heavey elaborates the diseases, as well as, explains the methods of fighting back with the bacterial pathogen. Heavy further explains the various types of vaccines available that can significantly reduce the prevalence of the bacterial infection. This is a qualitative article that provides an overview of the vaccination against pertussis. In addition, it gives the reader an excellent brief knowledge about the ...
