Early Life of Muhammad

Muhammad was born on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwa, l and in 570 A.D, in Mecca. The derivation of his name is from the Arabic name Hamada which means “to praise, to glorify.” He was the first child of Abdullah bin Al-Muttalib and Amina bint Wahab. His father had passed away before he was born. He was raised by his mother under the custody of Halima. At that time, there was a tradition of sending young boys to nurses who would take care of them and educate them and teach them pure Arabic.

When Muhammad was only six years old, his mother migrated to Yathrib so that he can visit his father's grave. When they were returning back from their journey, his mother fell ill and died. Halima returned back to Mecca and gave him to his grandfather, Abdul Al-Muttalib. In his care and guidance, Muhammad learned the skill of statecraft. At that time, Mecca was Arabs most important center for pilgrimage Muhammad's grandfather was one of the most respected leader. His grandfather was a part of Mecca's Elder Council and use to control vital pilgrimage concessions.

Muhammad's grandfather passed away when Muhammad was eight years old. Muhammad's custody was passed on to his uncle, Abu Talib. Muhammad grew up under the care of Abu Talib and remained under his protection for many years. As Muhammad grew up, and in his early twenties, he entered in to the service of a Mecca based merchant who was widow named Khadijah Bint Khawalayd. Muhammad was a distant cousin of Khadijah. Muhammad use to carry the merchandize, travel to the north, sell it off and bring back profits. Due to Muhammad's honest character, he was named “Al-Amin” meaning trustworthy. Impressed by Muhammad's honestly and faithfulness, Khadijah proposed her hand for marriage. At the time, of marriage, Muhammad was 25 years old, and Khadijah was 40 years old. Muhammad upon conversing with his uncle agreed to marry Khadijah in 595 A.D. His marriage journey was a pleasant and prosperous one. Muhammad had six children from her, two sons who passed away in infancy and from daughters. Mecca, at that time, prospered, as well. It was flourishing trading center for all traders as it was under the leadership of successful traders (www.muhammad.net).
