Self development is one of the most important issues faced by the managers. The reason behind is that mangers are not clear about the responsibility of self development. It is the responsibility of managers to look after their and their subordinates' development. Manager has to take responsibility for their development and career. Another important thing is to understand that development and learning is not limited to school age. For continues self development, managers have to commit themselves for improving their understandings and knowledge in their career (Frankbradley 2011).
Self development is considered as personal attribute of a person. It is the willingness and ability of a person to improve themselves at every stage of life. Inspiration of self development comes from internal and as well as external sources. Internal sources include self motivation and an external force includes getting inspired by other people and etc. To achieve goals and objectives of the organization, it is very important for manager to understand the importance of self development. It is their responsibility to look after themselves and their subordinates. As a manager they have to motivate the employees and build ability in them for continuous development (Gustafsson 2004, p. 271).
Assess Skills and Competencies
One of the most important parts of personal development plan is to evaluate own self on the current position (Vuono N.D). The evaluation is done on the basis of current position and requirements of the position. According to the scenario the evaluation of first line manager must be done as follows:
Does this position require any certification course or not.
If any certification is required then the manager is taking that course or not
When the particular course would be completed.
Does this certification will help in getting the position of senior manager?
All required coaching have been taken or not.
These coaching where taken internally or externally.
After doing the analysis on the current position, evaluation of strengths and development areas must be seen.
Strengths
In strength all the strengths as a manager must be written down like;
Good drive and self motivation
Ability to manage work and study
Using the knowledge of certification and applying them in the current role
Development Areas
To develop more understanding about the role of manager in a wider horizon means other functions
Deep understanding of key functions must be seen like employment laws.
Strong network with other departments must be made
Development Opportunities
As a manager it does not mean that person should not look for more development. A successful person always looks for more development opportunities in their career. On the managerial position also there are many opportunities and if opportunities are not visible then they have to find themselves.
