Use of Communication Skills in a Health and Social Care Context
Medical professionals are required to exhibit effective and convincing communication skills. This allows the practitioners to exchange information among the co-workers. It also provides space for useful collaboration with patients, their families along with the clinical and non-clinical colleagues and the general public. For developing effective communication skills, a medical practitioner must exert himself to be an active part in group works, interprofessional relationships, emotional intelligence, brazenness, and information and communication technologies (Pitkala et al, 2003, p. 155-160).
Communication in the health care context is characterized by the characteristics of socio-demographic factors of the caregiver and patient. With this, the environment in which the communication takes place is of immense significance. Communication between the practitioner and the patient is greatly affected by their sex, age, ethnicity, and social and educational background. Other factors, like room for privacy, ample time for encounters, cleanliness and comfort at the clinic, and the whole interaction of the patient with the practitioner inhibit or improve the relationship. Some of the aforementioned factors are independent and out of control, so the care providers can improve their communication skill by adopting specialized behaviors which can incur yielding results. The short term positive results include proper diagnosis and more effective treatment of medical problems (Newble et al, 1986, p.162-175).
