Introduction

This report discusses the Employee Selection and Performance Appraisal processes specific to a profit oriented Oil and Gas organisation. This organisation requested to remain anonymous and will be referred to as Organisation Z for the purposes of this report.

The task of evaluating the performance is a basic aspect of HR management in business organizations. A performance evaluation system is a technique of human resource management that determines the performance of each of the persons who are involved in this system, in relation to a number of factors identified in advance and therefore its contribution to the achievement of individual goals, departmental and global organization. 

The task of evaluating the performance should not be considered an annual review exercise, or as a method to try and punish or reward, but primarily to help, assist and improve human relations in the company. It is in short, an analysis of the past, at present, to project the future. The HR professional faces many challenges in achieving its objective in organizations. This goal can be summarized in the ongoing search for matches between the interests of human resources and the interests of the owner, for the better development of the organization to which they are integrated, not forgetting the social context in which they operate (Chenhall and Langfield, 2003, pp. 117-143). 

In concrete terms, the main challenge of human resources specialist is to achieve continuous improvement of organizations that make them more efficient and more effective. Being efficient means using the minimum amount of resources needed to produce goods and services and being effective means to achieve the production of these goods and services in an appropriate manner that is acceptable to society. These two factors lead to higher levels of productivity. The response the HR specialist gives the stated challenge is performance improvement and human resource contributions to the organization. The task of evaluating the performance is a basic aspect of human resource management in organizations. Performance evaluation is an essential function of one form or another is usually carried out in any modern organization. In assessing the organization obtains performance information for decision-making: If performance is less than that stipulated, corrective action must be taken, if performance is satisfactory, should be encouraged. 

Importance of Performance Appraisal

The staff appraisal or performance evaluation is defined as a systematic appraisal of the value that an individual shows, personal characteristics and / or for providing, with respect to the organization of which it is part, expressed periodically according to a precise procedure by one or more persons responsible in this regard and to know the individual and their work (Fisher, et al., 2005, pp. 563-583).
