Reflective essay: Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Feeding

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding refers to the process of feeding a severely ill patient through tubes. This process is followed for those patients who are unable to take oral diet normally (UHB, NHS, 2012, pp.2-4). These tubes serve to provide enteral nutrition to the patients through naso gastric tubes, intravenous tube, endoscopic gastrostomy tube and endoscopic jejunostomy tubes. The question that holds the main concern is, if these nurses are capable of handling the PEG.

This reflective essay has incorporated the Gibbs reflective cycle to explain the PEF feeding and associated problems from the nursing point of view. The reason of designing the assignment of Gibbs reflective essay is that it provides widespread and extensive knowledge with experiences and professional point of view. The case I have taken to in this assignment reflects the nursing practice in terms of PEG feeding. I have given the patient an unreal name, Mrs. T, to respect her privacy.

Discussion

A 55 years old patient, Mrs. T died in a nursing home. On assessment, it was found that her PEG feeding tube was resetting by a nurse in the nursing home. This caused the dose to be delivered 8 times faster than prescribed. This caused the transference of materials into the lungs and the patient started showing signs of aspiration pneumonia. The cameras revealed that the nurse was unable to fit the pump of PEG tube and this caused patient death. However, the patient was saved by the staff by quick medical treatment. Another nurse in the following week connected the feeding formula to the drainage tube in the abdomen. Mrs. T could not be saved this time.
