Abstract

Perceptions in manufacturing are the main focus of this research paper. The paper provides an analysis of the listening discussions that was aimed at two employee groups: young employees and older employees with children. Three areas were the major concern of the discussion and the paper is analyzing the responses of both the groups in these three areas.

Introduction

Perception although may be incorrect but can factually take the shape of reality unless it is being effectively challenged by someone. Changing a persistently malicious perception is a complex task. This is precisely the issue being faced by the manufacturing industry of United States. This research paper aims at analyzing the responses gathered for a listening discussion that was held for two groups (younger employees and older employees with children). The listening discussion was categorized into three areas namely general perceptions of manufacturing, manufacturing jobs and promotion of manufacturing careers. The research paper will take into account the responses provided by both groups of employees in the mentioned three areas.

Discussion

For a period of years, a general observation is that the manufacturing industry is considered both by general public and those working within the industry as one of the declining sector (Brousell, 2009). The manufacturing sector does not remain as the top choice of the people planning to enter in their professional life. Despite all these facts, a thoughtful analysis about manufacturing in the context of the people belonging to different age groups is very important. The summary of the listening discussion groups is provided in the following heads:

Young Employees

The youngsters usually look out for creative work and thus general perceptions about manufacturing make it consider as a dirty sound work that requires a physically hard labor. The job becomes boring because of the repetition of activities of similar nature under the leadership of rude and ungrateful bosses. The nature of job is stressful as the unrealistic goals are set by the company and bosses. Instead of working with machines, the majority of work is to be done with hands and thus require a lot of physical labor. As far as the growth of the manufacturing industry was concerned, the responses provided by this group of employees provided with information that the industry could be huge as the demand for products keep on increasing but the greedy nature of bosses led them to move overseas leading to the depletion of the local industry. There is no such career stability in manufacturing jobs according to the analysis of the responses provide by young employees. As far as the manufacturing facilities were concerned, a general perception of young employees considers them to be noisy, dirty, dangerous, unsocial, boring having long working hours. However, few consider manufacturing industry to provide decent pay as compared to other jobs.
