Introduction

The most valuable asset of any business organization is the “people” who work hard to achieve efficiency and profitability in its business operations (Bassi & McMurrer, 2004, pp. 3). The human resource needs to be managed effectively in order to inspire and instil a spirit of belonging and dedication amongst the employees. There are various factors that should have caused the manager at the supermarket to increase the motivation of company's employees. The primary reason is that business managers are responsible not only for devising successful and innovative business strategies but also to supervise their execution (Franken et.al, 2009, pp. 50). Therefore, it is important for the manger to have a supportive and motivated group of employees who can help him to carry out the plan.

Secondly, before setting out to understand the factors of motivating other employees, it is imperative for the manager to develop an understanding of his own motivations (Holton et.al, 2009, pp. 4). Lastly, if the manager at the supermarket is able to understand the factors of motivation, he will be in a better position to recruit, train and help the employees grow with the company. An effective manager understands that strategic plans and management meetings can only serve as a platform to drive growth for the company. To realize monetary benefits out of these strategies requires motivating the employees to carry out the proposed changes and measure performance on a regular basis. From the above analysis, we can conclude that the desire and intensity with which an individual engages to achieve the goals is called “motivation” (Iguisi, 2009, pp. 142). To be an effective motivator is one of the key essentials to be a good business leader.

This paper provides different theories of motivation that can help the manager working at a large supermarket chain in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, different approaches are presented to build and manage an effective teamwork oriented business environment in order to maximize the returns of collective effort.

There are a number of motivation theories that have been proposed to help managers improve the employee engagement in order to achieve long term sustainable positive change in the organization. Following are two theories that can be used by the managers at superstore to increase the current motivation level of the employees.

Goal Setting Theory
