Introduction

The Latin phrase Pax Britannica is used to denote the historical period in which the British Empire after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, came to dominate the seas around the world without face virtually no opposition. The term comes from the comparison with another much older historical era, the so-called Pax Romana , which the Roman Empire was militarily so superior to other forces that virtually no major wars that disrupted a peace based on the tacit acknowledgment of the existence of a superpower, which one, or almost no-one dares to challenge.
