Parenting is an important contribution to child development. However, a little research has been conducted on factors that shape parenting. There are three contextual factors which influence parenting practices including ethnicity of culture, socioeconomic status, and neighborhood or community context. The parenting practices differ on the basis of cultural diversity and processes. The cultural beliefs and heritage along with social factors are associated with parenting behavior.
Factors Influencing Parenting Practices
In different cultures, various practices are used for child development. For example, in China, a greater emphasis is placed on parental control in order to promote achievement among children. The traditional Chinese cultural values emphasize the proper development of character. In addition to cultural factors, family and socio-economic status also influences parenting practices. Socio-economic status is associated with the parenting practices of individuals. Poverty is also associated with the parenting practices of children and families. One of the pathways through which poverty is associated with parenting is disruption. The financial distress has an impact on the psychological functioning of families especially children. The neighborhood and community also have an impact on parenting techniques (Miller et al, 2012)
Neighborhood characteristics have been found to be associated with parenting dimension. There is an important relationship between neighborhoods and mental warmth towards children. It has been found that parents living in urban neighborhood are more focused towards monitoring the activities of their children than individuals living in rural areas.
