Definition

National Institute of Health (NIH, 2008) defines Obesity and Overweight as, Overweight implies an abundance measure of weight of physique, bone, fat, and liquid.1 Obesity in dictates a large quantity measure of fat in body (National Institute of Health, 1998).

Prevalence of Obesity

Surveys of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (Flegal KM, Carroll MD, Kit BK, Ogden CL, 1999-2000, Ogden CL, Carroll MD, Kit BK, Flegal KM, 2012) and the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) (National Health Interview Survey, 2012) concludes that,

Above two-third (68.8 percent) of grown person aging from 20 and older were overweight. Highly obsess adults were more than one third (35.7 percent). Highly obsessed were Out of 20, 1 (6.3 percent. From 4, men, 3 were overweight or fat. Men and women showed similar obesity rate (74 percent). Exceptionally overweight women were 8 percent (Chart 1).

Causes

Energy imbalance is the cause of obesity. Body requires energy (measured in calories) work and performs. When balance between calorie intake and calorie burn is equivalent, body weight does not change or swing. As time passes by, one steps towards obesity when intake of calories increases than calories burned.

Same rule applies to children nevertheless they need more energy (or calories) than adults because they are in the growing stage. They also need to adjust their calorie intake and usage stable and balance. Energy used supports and helps body grow and develop.

There are numerous components, which accelerate weight gain. Reasons could be hereditary or genetic makeup, eating habit, living place, disposition and feelings, life propensities, and earning amount (National Institute of Health, 1998).
