About NIOSH

The United States federal agency for conducting research is known as National Institute for Occupational Safety and health (NIOSH) formulate proposals in order to prevent worker injury and sickness NIOSH (2013a).Their research facility is responsible for conducting practical research and presents solutions to recognized problems. Around 155 million workers are protected by the health and safely procedures researched by NIOSH nationwide. Standing up to the demands of the 21st century, NIOSH provides health and safety facilities to workers, their families, businesses and communities promoting a healthy workforce in the United States NIOSH (2013a).

Origin

President Richard Nixon in December 1970 signed The Occupational Safety and Health Act that established NIOSH. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) was also established under that act which is also a partner of NIOSH. It helps the U.S department of labor to expand health and safety conventions and also enforce those regulations. United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the parent body of NIOSH, under the United States department of Health and Human Services. With more than 1,200 employees from a range of fields and backgrounds such as Epidemiology, Medicine, Nursing, Safety, Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Statistics and a number of engineering branches. NIOSH provided technical support to respond to the safety and health in the WTC rescue operation. There are a number of milestones achieved by the organization throughout the years NIOSH (2011).

Mission

The mission of NIOSH is to provide practical solutions and producing scientific knowledge to reduce dangers of damage and casualty in conventional industries that include agriculture mining and construction. The Institute ensures her support in the prevention of modern damages to overcome workplace and workforce issues and provides research to predict and counter such problems NIOSH (2013a). A number of different stakeholders with various partners are working with NIOSH to research injuries and causalities to reduce the number. The institute is working beyond the boundaries to provide support to professionals in the field of health and safety to substantially filling the gap and generating a new skilled force meeting the contemporary requirements. The U.S economic growth is supported by practical researches and solutions by the NIOSH and partner institutions building a competent labor force by health and safety procedures implemented NIOSH (2013c).

Locations

The headquarters of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Heath is in Washington D.C. There is also a compatible research facility in Atlanta, Georgia. There are research laboratories and regional offices in Anchorage, Alaska; Cincinnati, Ohio; Morgantown, West Virginia; Denver, Colorado; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Spokane, Washington NIOSH(2013a).
