In “The Necklace,” the secret arrives into play when the major character's breaches are for the time being topped up by the ball, the gown, and, most significantly, Madame Forester's jewels. Although the happening and the dress are prerequisites for Madame Loisel's joyfulness, she is “utterly miserable” and gravely contemplates not going to the Ministry because she needs jewellery and the look of elegance and wealth.
