Outlaw hero/social bandit in relation to Walter Scott's 'Rob Roy
Introduction
Notion of Outlaw Bandit The concept of outlaw draws a picture of the person who violates the law or rule, OR it is the character that is deprived of assistance and defence of law. This notion is also used in case of a banished character. Such character or individual operates a set patterned group to accomplish their unlegislated purpose; this procession is known as bandit. The outlaw hero bandit/social bandit is a fugitive, belongs to a gang that aims to fight unruly against their opponent political party or social power. The above defined rebellious characters have been part of folk tales which sometime depict true stories of victims but it can be fictitious as well. Robin Hood is an example of outlaw hero who robbed riches and provided to poor in the story. Walter Scott's Rob Roy is one of his finest writing records that has a self explanatory theme of outlaw social bandit of 19th century. This outlaw is a Scottish folk that gives the design of adventure. Rob Roy was a complete idea of novel that narrates about the hero of true story who was victim of chaos among English and Scottish people in 1715. Scott portrays conflict among economical, moral and political forces of that time which affected the inhabitants. The novel is closely related with experiences of Scott's personal life which mainly included his profound interest in historical events which moved him to write a marvellous Robert Mac Gregor who has nick Rob Roy in the story. Scott claims for his legendry Mac Gregor that he is still well known in Highland like Robin Hood of Scotland, he is a threat to wealthy people and companion to the poor, person with sound body and sound mind but his destiny did not play positive part in his life (Scott, 1956, pp. 399). Outlaw of the novel shows that the character of Mac Gregor depicts the hardships of his life even then he lived for truth rebelliously and fought to preserve the modes of Highlands. The critics named the novel in different categories, some of them state it a romance, a few says it a historical record of economical conflicts and some say it is a realistic novel. I opine that it is close to a realistic novel, which is written in true setting of the time and based on writer's interest, experiences, and observations.
