Othello - An Analysis of Emilia and Desdemona

Introduction

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is one of the most renowned plays written by the maestro William Shakespeare. It is based on the real life story of the Italian captain Mooro. The novel was written back in the year 163 and contains four main characters. These are Othello who is a general in the Viatnamese army and his wife Desdemona (Jones, 1971). The other two very important characters in the novel are Emilia and her husband Iago who is also the villain in the play. The paper discusses the comparison and contrast between the two women and represents some of the major personality traits shared by the two.

Discussion

The two women in the play are both very attractive and immediately catch the attention of the reader. They both have an aura about their personality. The crisis that goes on in the play is resolved towards the end and the two women remain an active part of it throughout. As concerns the personality traits of Desdemona are that she is beautiful, she is a fair warrior and she is a bit naïve. The beauty of Desdemona is reflected in the fact that many had fallen for her. She was always expected to get married to someone elite and worthy of her love on the basis of her pride and performance. However, against the expectations of all she eloped with Othello.

The other personality characteristic that is the fairness of her personality is revealed towards the end of the play (Jones, 1971). She transforms as a person just like her husband Othello.
