Othello

Introduction

Othello is a tragedy based on an Italian short story and is written by William Shakespeare. It was published in 1565 and it is about four main characters; Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; Desdemona, his wife; Cassio, his lieutenant and his trusted ensign was Iago (Shakespeare, pp. 1). The character, which I will focus, is Othello who is more commonly known as the “moor.” However, the role of Othello was not much successful mainly because of the circumstances that forced him to murder his wife.

Role of Othello

Othello is a brave and a competent Moorish general in the Venetian army, who elopes with the daughter of a Venetian senator. After he is set out to Cyprus, he is manipulated by Ancient lago who makes him belief that Desdemona, the one with whom he elopes is an adulterous. Therefore, he murders her after which he kills himself too.

Characteristics of Othello

There were many different views on the character of Othello in years. They span from describing Othello as a hero to describe it as egotistical. Bradley calls Othello "the most romantic of all Shakespeare's heroes" and "greatest poet of all them. On the one hand, federal republic, Leavis describes Othello as "egotistical". There are those who adopt as well a less critical to the character of Othello William Hazlitt. Hazlitt makes a statement saying that "the nature of the mooring is noble ... but his blood is so inflammable. Othello was a person with kind nature, but the main reason of his jealousy was created by the Iago. From my point of view Othello changed a lot from the beginning of the play till the end.
