Abstract

The intention of the research is to understand the origin of modern day Russian organized crime. A variety of literatures have been reviewed to get a better understanding of the topic, and to study the background of Russia and the organized crime associated with it. The reform policies of Mikhail Gorbachev were thrown into the Eastern European revolutionary political, social and economic processes. However, the liberalization and the consequent weakening of the state resulted in the criminal world of the former Soviet Union to change. The Russian organized crime is not temporary, and certainly not a random phenomenon. The modern Russian organized crime was thus composed of two main sources: the "modernists" among "thieves in law" and the corrupt officials at all levels of government.
