Abstract

Google is a global technology leader concentrated upon enhancing the ways people connect with information. Google is recognized for its distinctive organizational culture. This paper seeks to provide an overview of organizational culture at Google. It is concluded that for the sustenance of dominant and pervasive presence globally, Google has to sustain its current organization culture of openness and communication.

Google has been acknowledged for having one of the most exciting organizational cultures. According to Fortune (2007), Google is among one of the top 100 companies to work that's why I have chosen this organization for analysis. Google is one of the most useful and fastest web search engines around. Google Inc. is primarily engaged in offering online advertising. Headquartered in Mountain View, California, the company operates in the US, the UK and in various other countries across the world. Google holds 32,467 employees as of December 31, 2011 (Marketline, 2012). The key products and services of company include web search, image search, mobile, browser, documents, news, social groups, translation tools, developer tools, specialized search, resources, application program interfaces and advertising.

Organizational Culture at Google

In an article by Anonymous (2009) published in the Economist, the corporate culture of Google is regarded as creative, which offers innovations just about as fast as results are served up by its popular search-engine. Google holds regular meetings with its employees, where they are encouraged to present new ideas to chief executive of firm- Eric Schmidt, and its co-founders- Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The culture at Google is a combination of different aspects. It is innovative, ethical and customer-responsive. Employees are encouraged by Google to be creative in problem solving which, at times, involves risk taking. The enough freedom provided to employees in their jobs employees keeps them on ethical ground. Google has built up a sense of team among its employees, rather than self, which encourages them to collaborate for goal achievement instead of unhealthy competition against one another. Unethical behavior is also prevented because of team spirit (Hernandez, 2008).
