Organizational Behavior

Introduction

This paper will represent the attributes of organizational culture of my previous employer. I had worked in Starbucks for five years in Information Technology department. I will share several aspects of organizational culture, modes of communications, nature of authority, motivational techniques and, how much emotional intelligence policies implemented in the organizational culture of Starbucks.

Discussion

I start with the brief overview of Starbucks as, Starbucks has grown tremendously after its opening 17 stores in United States and then, 5689 outlets in different countries (28 countries approximately). United States' market is not playing vital role for growing any mature business that is why, Starbucks is also facing few issues in United States and, it has just out rooted in 8 states.

It has been found that Starbucks has the loss of 30% and, despite of all that, it has the strategy to open new stores in entire world. Starbucks is following the strategy to open new stores in order to generate more revenue and, profit and, most important of market dominance. Starbucks has also adopted strategy to pay rent for its stores more than other coffee shops in order to keep the competitors out of the market (Pritchard, 2006).

Organizational Culture

The most common culture, found in the organization was pluralism. Pluralism described in the organization, that multitude groups govern the organization (Pritchard, 2006). It has seen that, company was not dominated by a single elite but; small groups have the influence on the organization. The power of these groups was restricted to some areas. The influence of pluralism did not allow staff of research and development, to introduce new concepts time to time and, created hurdles in their research work. It has also seen top management, favors the pluralism in the organization and, do not care about the new products to come into the market, because they believe that old and popular taste of coffee can bring more profit to them, instead of inventing new tastes. The idea of pluralism did not go in favor of organizational growth and, management was not taking it seriously.

The dualism culture also prevailed in the organization, which clearly identified conflicts between good and evil. There are certain key issues in the organization such as; taste of coffee was not remained as good, as it was at the start of the organization. Many management staff insisted to stop promoting new tastes and, improved the old taste and, there was the continuous conflict between management. There are also limitations in sharing of resources especially overseas organizations of Starbucks and retail stores (Pritchard, 2006).

Salad bowl culture was the essential part of the organizational culture of Starbucks as; there were employees from different locations, especially in United States. All the employees were combined like a Salad and, tend to perform their duties in order to achieve their specific targets. There was too much workload on the employees that, they waited long for their breaks and holidays. This culture helped the employees, to work without racial discrimination and, ...
