Introduction

This paper is written for City College's principal to advise him on different organisational culture and structure, which is quite significant for effective and successful functioning of business. The flow of this paper is as follows: comparison of different organisational culture and structure, and its impact on business performance, effective leadership styles, organisational theories that underpin management practices, different approaches to the management, role of leaders during change, and technology impact on functioning of the team. This will assist Mr. Wakefield to decide on management and leadership approaches that he can adopt during change while enhancing business performance.

1.1 Compare and Contrast Different Organisational Culture and Structure

Organisational culture is an essential component of an organisation, and it may include set of attitudes, habits, policies, symbols, values and traditions, which guide the behaviours and conduct within the workplace by determining expected behaviours during different times. Since, City College is a service oriented business which necessitates Mr. Wakefield to promote a culture that can facilitate customers' (either, internal or external customers) needs. This form of culture emphasises on five principles: clear communication, promise what you can deliver, focus on career development, teamwork and culture, and believe in what they do (Hao, Kasper & Muehlbacher, 2012, pp.36-52). This type of culture allows building relationship with all stakeholders, and helps them in remain competitive. On the contrary, rigid culture with strong structure of reporting guarantees effective and appropriate structure of power within the firm, where staff role and employees are defined, as well as lack in terms of collaboration and innovation.

This sort of culture and structure within the workplace helps administration or management to meet short-term goals successfully without delay; however, often result in lower motivation among employees (Henttonen & Kettunen, 2011, pp.86-103). City College is a service oriented business, and it is vital for leaders and management to focus on both students (external) and internal (staff and faculty). Therefore, it is proposed that Mr. Wakefield should find a fit between cultures of City College and City College. The culture of an organisation must based on the shared norms and meanings development, along with clear defined roles and communication channels, which eventually guides the norms that become cultural attributes of the institution.

Structure of an organisation also plays an essential role and has a significant effect on business performance.
