Introduction

The company that I have chosen is 'Subway Restaurant'. August 28 1965 , and Dr. Fred DeLyuka Peter Buck opened the first restaurant in Bridgeport , State of Connecticut and named it «Pete's Super Submarines». Fred, who was then aged 17, needed money to finance their studies at the university [3] , and as a solution to this problem a friend of his family, Peter Buck suggested he open a shop selling sandwiches . Buck has provided loan of $ 1,000, and Fred DeLyuka took over management of the business.

After a while the restaurant's name was changed to «Pete's Subway», and then on «Subway». One reason for the name change was that many customers who have heard the name «Pete's Subway» were sure that this restaurant sells pizza Some time in the design of his restaurants used network motifs of underground New York City.

In 1974 the size of the network at 32 restaurants and decided to move to the concept of franchising , which became in those years, more and more popular in the U.S. for further development of chain restaurants. In 1987 was opened thousandth restaurant. Since the early 1990s, Subway opened 1,000 new restaurants annually. Subway 14 times has been awarded the "Best World franchise system" (Entrepreneur Magazine rated).In 2001 Fred DeLyuka wrote a book with advice for novice businessmen "Start small and finish big 15 hours for opening and maintaining a successful business", based on the success of the Subway (Adams, 1986)..

Subway has positioned itself as a healthy alternative to a network of fast food restaurants, which is reflected in the slogan of "Eat fresh". Network name is derived from the English top boxes «sub», to reduce the «Submarine Sandwich» Sandwiches manufactured by, were so named because of their elongated and rounded, like a submarine. The first Subway restaurant opened in 1965 in Bridgeport , Connecticut ( USA ) under the name «Pete's Super Submarines». Subway in Germany called "eatery 1000 questions" (Addelman, 1962).

The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used extensively in business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals.

At Subway, Fred DeLuca, President, is considering the implementation of a performance measurement system which will hopefully address issues franchisees are experiencing. One performance measurement system that is under consideration is the Balanced Scorecard.The SUBWAY® chain and its more than 25,000 franchised units are very active in the community. Many of the franchise owners help support their local communities through monetary and product donations. Their assistance has helped benefit many non-profit organizations and charities, as well as schools and clubs. The corporate headquarters also assists many organizations, including the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Conservation International, United Way, National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Multiple Sclerosis Society of America, and many organizations local to the Milford, Connecticut office.
