Job Description and Specifications

The operating room nurse is required for a prestigious hospital. Four to five years experience is required, but fresh graduates may also apply for the position. The entry level individuals are given training first and usually on a certain period of probation. The salary range is attributed to level of experience, environment, employer, and geographic location. However, the range is between $55,864 and $67,890. Following are the required specifications and requirements for the job:

Education and Certification

Following are the required education and certification qualification for the OR nurse position:

Candidate must complete a Bachelor Degree and should have applied to 4 years of medical school in order to get the job of OR nurse.

Candidate must have passed at least three successive stringent national board exams (Step 1, 2 and 3 following according to United State Medical Licensing Exams, “USMLE”), which covers all questions from surgical and medicine fields.

Other Qualities and Requirements

The nurses must have excellent knowledge, communication, management and decision making skills. The first quality they should posses is to be able to work under pressure as many times surgeons have to operate upon emergency cases. They should also be able to tolerate the sight of a lot of blood as the patients bleed in the operation. Compassion, commitment and conscience are integral qualities that are part of professional nursing (American Nurses Association, 2009). The OR nurse makes sure that she/he performs each and every duty with responsibility as he or she is dealing with the lives of people. The nurse is able to carefully examine the patients and then perform the treatment. The care, diagnosis and treatment are all known as the professional activities and the nurses should be able to work in a responsible manner.

They have to assist the surgeons during surgery, and they have to also coordinate with surgical technicians

They have to sterilize all the surgical equipment before and after the surgery

They have to clean themselves also and maintain good hygiene standards

The operating nurses have to do an instrument check before and after the surgery
