Occupational Therapy in Mental Health Patients

Occupational Therapy in Mental Health Patients

Introduction

One of the priorities of health development in the United Kingdom is the creation, implementation and further development of the most promising model of primary health care. Occupational therapy is one of the most promising models of health care especially for mentally ill patients. Occupational therapy is a therapy that aims to adapt to our limits and our physical and mental potential through meaningful activities, whether domestic, work, recreation and games (Stancliff, 2006, 17). The occupational therapist is involved in physical and mental health among people of all ages who have various issues that affect their independence, caused either by disease or the effects of disease, trauma, mental health, developmental disabilities, disabilities, disability or aging. The occupational therapist helps solve functional problems in promoting the realization of the lifestyle as independently and productively as possible to facilitate the integration of the individual in his environment and the community, to ensure its preservation and to promote social participation.

Occupational therapy is one of the most effective means of rehabilitation. However, such a role in the therapeutic arsenal of this type of treatment can only be maintained in a reasonable approach to its application. Occupational therapy, is indicated as a beneficial effect on its psycho-emotional sphere, in particular the "mobilization of the will," "improved mood", the emergence of "mental conditions necessary for rehabilitation," "suppression of feelings of inferiority," "creative satisfaction" "joy of Labour" (Sharfstein, 2000, 616).

Professional Agenda

Society is in need of health professionals as the decrease in the number of occupational therapists actively practicing in the area of mental health has been a concern of the profession for several years. Current data shows indicate a significant decline in the number of occupational therapists practicing in mental health from 17% to 9 %. With the new policy by Community Mental Health Act, care of mentally ill was proposed to change from state hospitals to community facilities and programs (Keren, 2011, 287).

It was found that occupational therapy failed to serve its clients in this new capacity by not adapting to this variation in service delivery model while other professions namely psychology and nursing, were more ready to adjust to the changing needs of mentally ill. Therefore; agenda of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of occupational therapy intervening society, individuals and individuals. This research is aimed at promoting health for the quality life of an individual (mentally ill). In addition, this research is aimed at promoting change in occupational therapy through education (Wish, 1989, 257). In short we can say that professional agenda is mainly related with an examination of links between occupational therapy education, practice and its impact on the real world.
