Assessing the Need for Change

Nursing staffing is crucial to optimal patient care, safety and well being. Nurses are a vital part of the healthcare system of the country, they need to be acknowledged for their efforts and constantly praised, and proper incentives should be implemented to increase the morale and motivation of nurses. Staffing function is considered to be the building block for the growth and success of the healthcare organization, and future talent. It allows the healthcare organizations to recruit and select right candidate for the right job. The healthcare company that follows complete staffing process ensures that employee in the organization understands organizational culture. The staffing process supports development as a whole in the organization. Therefore, above facts enlighten the statement that management development starts with staffing function (Buchan et.al, 2008).

Inadequate staffing can lead to medication errors, increased infection rate, falls and overall mortality rate. In order to give better care, it is important to have an adequate staffing pattern. The Nursing unit will have 4 nursing for 8 patients for all shifts, they will be extra per diems nurses when other nurses are not on schedule or and during emergency. The shortage is resulting in severe loss within the healthcare system since the patient care required in speeding the patient's recovery is jeopardized. This shortage also affects the quality of care nurses provide, since nurses are now being assigned to additional patients the quality of treatment and the level of dedication has been affected.

The main obstacle is to retain the senior's nurses, hire new nurses, and provide an environment that provides personal and professional growth. Proper structured teaching models should be introduced focusing around appropriate patient care. The work environment needs to be restructured and should be shifted towards a more lively and pleasant one, morale's are down due to the increased shortage and in the workload management needs to make the nurses feel appreciated and should ensure a culture is established that ensures satisfaction. Nurses should also have career development and growth, on job training programs should be established in order to motivate nurses to seek growth in their careers. Strategies should be devised and implemented in order to retain the nurses (Evans et.al, 1992).

A marketing effort needs to be started in order to improve the image of nurses. Schools should provide career counseling, highlighting the positives of nursing. The development of intra and interdisciplinary teams can play an effective role in development of the role of nursing professionals. The teams will be responsible for implementing a well coordinated and collaborative framework of performance that polishes the professional proficiencies of the nursing professionals, and ensure better patient car outcomes. The teams, through empowerment of the nurturing experts can support the viable groups in a better manner, hence, improving the efficiency of working.
