Nursing Process for the Teaching Based on Patient Needs

Introduction

There are hundreds of patients in the United States like Dallas. According to the rough estimate by Centers for Disease Control website, there are total seventeen million people in the United States who are suffering from diabetes and it makes six percent of the total population. Out of this, seven million people are above the age of sixty five, and it makes twenty percent of people with diabetes. Based on Dallas situation in which he is not ready to accept any change, a teaching strategy is presented here for his nursing process that will best serve the purpose of bringing Dallas on diet advised for the diabetic patients.

Before we discuss the case of Dallas, it is very important to shed light on the concept of community and the need of community based nursing. The knowledge of community and the issues that led to the development of the community based nursing is highly important for the nurses today. It will further help them to maintain quality of their patient's care.

Concept of Community

There are a number of ways in which community can be defined. Cultural groups, families and individuals present the concept of a community. With this, the demographic details of race, gender, age, social class, lifestyle, interests, hobbies and geographical boundaries also represent the community. However, the general characteristics of the family contribute towards the overall couture of the community and that culture further explains the health care needs of the people living in that community (White, 1995).

The families in the developing countries may not need the health care facilities as the families of the developed countries do. There are certain parts of the world where people live in joint family system with their, parents and grandparents. The concept of child health care is different in these families as there are a number of people taking care of the child other than parents. Thus, the role of each individual in the family is always decided by the prevailing culture of the community(Pope et al, 1995).

Acute, Community Health and the Community Based Nursing

With the concept of community, a nurse must also be familiar with the nursing focusing on community health, acute nursing and a community based nursing. All three concepts are used in different situations with different clients. The acute nursing focuses on the clients who have been isolated from their families because of the diagnosis of some disease. On the other hand, community health refers to the practices determined by the physician, family, health care centers, and mainly based on the social values of the community. As far as the community-based nursing is concerned, the effort is made to maximize the client's health in his natural environment. It is the prime responsibility of the community based nurse to teach patients and their families about self-care in the framework of family and community.
