Nursing Policy

Introduction

Local governments and federal state deal with numerous tasks of health-care. Doctors, health care professionals and nurses offer direct care to patients. The demands of growing population leads to the overfilled-hospitals, working very hard for preventing patients to turn away, having few nurses who are taking care of multiple patients at a time. Due to this reason there is continuous discussion from the last few years that this work load could be harmful to the patients.

Discussion

Council of District of Columbia rejuvenated this discussion. According to the act of Patient Protection Act 2013 (Leg number B20-0101), introduced by Phil Mendelson who is a council chairman and other 8 council members co-sponsored this act, puts strictly nurse to patient boundaries and this whole completely depends on the hospitals and their environments in which patients are dealt. For instance, one nurse is allowed to deal with one patient at a time but this is applicable for operating nurses where as non trauma nurses can take care of 4 patients. This act was proposed in 1999 by the state government of California and its application started from 2005.

Numerous nurse sensitive indicators in the hospitals of California suggested that despite of increasing costs there is good effect on the patients care. This was studied by California Health Care Federation. This study found out that there was an increment in the sepsis rates, ulcers, and thrombosis where as there was a decline in the pneumonia death rates and failure to prevent it between 1999 and 2006.the study came to the conclusion that majority of indicators that are measured ''they are not affected straightly due to the increment in staffing of RN.''
