Nursing Philosophy: My Viewpoint on Nursing Profession and Career Choice

Introduction

A nurse has to play a key role in all aspects of nursing practice in primary care settings in order to improve health outcomes such as family practice or clinic walk-in. In other words, nurse works with the physician to provide comprehensive care to all patients, rather than simply perform definite tasks, such as immunizations or vital signs (Kathleen, 2009). This paper presents my viewpoint towards Nursing Philosophy. It presents an overview of why I chose nursing as a profession, what the role of nursing implies for the society and patients. It also explores the essence of nursing, my own beliefs and values about patients, and my future visions.

Choice of Nursing

The nurse plays a vital role in the care, treatment, and pain management (Susan, 2008). Many nurses are unable to realize their capabilities and full potential for working in primary care settings. They also do not estimate the valuable contributions that they are able to provide community health management in their workplace (Smith, 2007). I chose nursing as my dream profession that I idealized during my early teenage. I had always enjoyed taking care of people when they were sick. Loss of a family member including my parents and brother, I turned towards nursing in order to divert my attention and overcome my grief by helping others. I decided to return to school back in 2003 and started working on getting into the nursing program. My application was accepted in 2005, and I successfully completed my graduation in the field of nursing in 2007.

Essence of Nursing

In the primary care terms, nurses work side by side in partnership with the physician and other health care professionals (Susan, 2008). Good nursing care in pain management in multiple sclerosis requires a solid foundation in science and ability to handle the critical needs of patient related to pain management. This requires careful attention to the details by the nurses, particular communication, and a vigilant awareness of potential biases in treatment (Allen, 2001). Therefore, the therapeutic relationship is most effective in enhancing pain management capability during treatment of patients (Smith, 2007). Nurses must be able to handle the major aspects of pain that are physical, psychological, and environmental. A nurse undertakes assessment and review of the individual's symptoms and answers any questions and helps in address patient problems, while aiming for providing utmost care (Kathleen, 2009).

Registered nurses take a holistic and comprehensive approach that is not limited to the management of chronic diseases. Nurse role is essential to the functional elements of better detection, health promotion, early detection, management of chronic diseases and improved access of care to the patient.
