Introduction

In today's era, the competition among the people as well as among the organizations has increased to a great extent. In order to be competitive and survive in the modern world, individuals are required to continuously enhance and polish their skills. The personal and professional development is important not only to evolve personally but also professionally (Anna, C., 2000, pp. 124). The individuals that, on the continual basis, develop their skills tend to achieve the competitive positions in the industry are rendered as successful. Leaders are the foremost personalities that needs changes in behavior and flexibility according to situations. The technological as well as strategic advancements are being continuously made in every field of life. New trends, concepts as well as new technologies are emerging that are required to be learnt and to be adopted by individuals to achieve the adequate level of positions (David, M., Vivien, W., 2003, pp. 52).

The personal development of leadership skills is essential and is linked directly to the notion of professionalism. The personal and professional development as a leader gives the individual strength, and it open wide variety of opportunities and innovative ideas to boost up the organizations and as a nurse by acquiring effective leadership skills we can handle the patients. Therefore, as an individual the personal assessments must be carried out on the regular basis in order to understand his or her true potential and the current standing of the individual against the other. This will help him, or her to gauge and overcome weaknesses and further solidify his or her strengths. The following section aims at discussing the development and implementation of leadership styles as a nurse, while leading a change in coronary care unit.

Discussion

According to the Royal College of Nursing, the purpose of nursing encompasses several aspects that give a holistic insight into the nursing profession. These include promoting and maintaining health, caring for individuals with compromised health, assisting recovery, facilitating independence, meeting needs and improving well being. Furthermore, the practice of nursing maintains specific prerequisites, among which education and knowledge of applying learned concepts is vital. Nursing skills must aptly provide direct patient care. Nurses must possess a portfolio of numerous skills including leadership skills, experience, empowering patients, communication skills, teamwork and compassion (Royal College of Nursing p.11).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) advocates competency as an imperative component of the nurse's skills set. In the WHO 2000a: Glossary, competency implies “a framework of skills reflecting knowledge, attitudes and psycho-motor elements” (World Health Organisation, 2001). The increasing number of cardiac patient every year, simultaneously the provision of quality care to them, causing many challenges to be faced by the health care system.
