Nursing Design

Introduction

Florence Nightingale once said, "You ask me why I do not write something. I think one's feelings waste themselves in words they should all be distilled into actions and into actions that bring results" (Woodham-Smith, 1951). I find this quote to be true because sometimes actions are more important than words (especially in the nursing profession). Since the early 1800s nursing has quickly evolved into what we know it as today. Nursing is a unique profession in that there are many different types of nurses, yet they can all experience the beginning of life as well as the end of life. Both nurses as well as community-based nurses can yield special bonds with patients and their families. To me nursing is a very worthwhile profession and to become any type of nurse is an award within itself.

Nurse Administrator

The nurse administrator is a registered nurse who orchestrated and influences the work of others in a defined environment most often health care focused, to enhance the shared vision of an organization or institution (ANA, 2009 p3). A nurse administrator is an expert leader in the health care industry. She is dynamic, multitalented, a role model, advocate, mentor, coach, teacher, and an ambassador for health care. She is someone that shows dedication to the conformity of ethical values in the nursing profession and advocates for nursing practice upon the highest level. She aspires and helps nurses to perform in the fulfillment of their nursing profession as well as help them in achieving the highest quality in safe patient care. She has a moral obligation to promote the preservation of human health and the environment as well as an ethical obligation to aim and help in attaining an optimum level of functioning for an individual. As a leader she must actively be involved in the innovation and future advancements in the nursing profession, as well as the improvement in an effective delivery of health care. The nurse administrator has a commitment in the attainment of the institution's goals as well as an ethical obligation that nurses are performing in the bound of a safe nursing practice where the patients are receiving the best safe sound patient care. As cited by ANA (p5) Nurse administrators shape the environment in which nurses practice and teach and consumers receive health care, with the goal of inspiring those around them to reach for excellence in their practice (Lugton, 2000).

Culture Care Theory of Diversity and Universality

Madeline M. Leininger is the founder of Transcultural nursing and a leader in Transcultural nursing and human care theory (Nursing Theoies, 7th Ed. p454). She has defined Transcultural nursing as a major area of nursing that focuses on the comparative study and analysis of diverse cultures and subcultures in the world with respect to their caring values, expressions, and health-illness beliefs and patterns of behavior (Dunstan, 2001). We are living in the world of multicultural diversity. The leaders of health care must be educated in regards to different ...
